When should you use Links say where they go?

link-purposefunctionalrequired

A screen-reader user skimming a list of links hears "link" or a row of identical "learn more"s and cannot tell them apart; every link must have a name, and a generic one needs the words around it to say where it goes.

When should you use this check?

Run this on every page with links, which is every page. Screen-reader users often pull up a list of links to skim a page; a link with no name or a column of identical "Read more"s makes that list useless. Card grids and icon-only navigation are where it finds the most.

When should you not?

It accepts a generic phrase whenever the words around the link — its sentence, list item, table cell, or a heading in the same card — say where it goes, because WCAG's Level A criterion does. If you want every link to stand alone out of context, that is the stricter AAA criterion 2.4.9, which this check does not apply.

What does it inspect?

links with no accessible name; a bare "Learn more" with nothing around it; icon links with no label

What does a failure mean?

A failure names the link and either that it has no accessible name at all, or that its whole name is a generic phrase such as "Learn more" with nothing nearby that identifies the destination. A generic word that is the destination's own name — a product called "Link" — is not counted.

What are the Standard defaults — and why?

There is no threshold. WCAG 2.4.4 asks that each link's purpose be determinable from its text together with its programmatic context; the generic phrases are WCAG's own examples (failure F63 and technique H80).

How does an agent call it?

{ "type": "url", "validations": ["link-purpose"] }
